Oxford Retains Global Crown as UI, UNILAG Lead Nigeria in 2026 World Rankings

Oxford Retains Global Crown as UI, UNILAG Lead Nigeria in 2026 World Rankings

The University of Oxford has retained its position as the best university in the world for a record-breaking 10th consecutive year, while the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have emerged as the joint-best institutions in Nigeria in the newly released 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

Addressing educational stakeholders in Abuja following the release of the global list, the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, maintained that the new rankings reveal a competitive shift in Nigeria’s tertiary landscape.

“This is an improvement over the 2025 league tables, specifically regarding the competitive spread among our federal institutions,” Okebukola said.

He highlighted that while the University of Oxford continues to lead globally, followed closely by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard, the local focus remains on the reshuffling of Nigeria’s top spots.

He added: “The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos have both secured the top range score of 801–1,000. This is a significant development because it marks a shift from previous years where we saw a different hierarchy. UI has effectively reclaimed its position at the top, sharing the podium with UNILAG.”

Okebukola clarified that while 51 Nigerian universities were ranked—an increase from the previous year—the overall global positioning requires urgent attention to research funding and infrastructure.

He added: “Covenant University and Bayero University Kano are now in the 1,001–1,200 band. While they remain elite institutions in our country, the slip in global banding for some of our previous leaders is a call to action. We must look at the 18 performance indicators used by Times Higher Education, especially research quality and industry links, and ask ourselves where the gaps are.”

The 2026 rankings assessed over 2,000 institutions from 115 countries. While the United States and United Kingdom dominate the top 10, the data shows a stagnation for some Asian giants and a slight underperformance for Nigerian universities in the upper echelons compared to South African counterparts like the University of Cape Town.
